Political Justice and Morality (Gun Control Reflection)
Alec Enriquez 12/9/15
In this project we had long process leading to it by reading several books. Like Thoreau went to jail and Justice talking about philosophy about justice. Also wrote few papers and some research on our topic. It took all together almost 2 months of changing and unchanging our view points so we can understand both sides of each problems that we are looking into. We also looked in different philosophy. So we can see and understand both sides and see what these other people’s understandings and believes. We also took a test on philosophy’s and I think it came to place also in our concept.
The major changes that I made in my op-ed is I totally reorganized my paragraph to make sense and so that it would flow to what I was trying to say in my op-ed. I also added information to help my writing and my argument to be stronger. My weakness is editing and paper organization with my paragraphs. Also many hours just getting crique and getting help with my formatt. My writing at times can be messy with my thoughts ideas and facts. with editing format is weakness.
My art is just a visual piece is just my op-ed but a visual piece. I have two flags on left and right. One flag to the right is norwegian flag. One on the left is an american flag. The flags have bullet holes in it and rips in the flag to show gun violence in that country. The American flags has more rips and bullet holes it because it has a highest rate of gun violence in the world. It also has a gun at bottom so people get the deal that is has do with gun control then it going to have a quote on top. Also I did the quote from John Rawls because I think they should evaluate people the same. With norway they have to go through the police station and each goes through.
What I have learned about writing about political issue is to Show examples and to show ideas and not to tell amand it just show look at both side. To evaluate ideas and to show your views and answer them in a understandable manner. What has help me to changed and write my op-ed is looking at some liberal ideas and being just some philosophy that learned about. What I learned about talking to people is asking them question about their ideas and their views. Then you can give them some of your ideas that would help but also relate to their views too. There a lady at exhibition who was no gun control said views very strongly and no argument just explaining some facts about Norway and I think I made her like american even more. her last words were “God Bless America.” Even though I do not agree with that term. America is seen by the people as a lamb but really seen as a lion.

Down is the Interviews to Story corp.

The interview I conducted was with Jim Hopper. He has been in the Durango area for a long time where he even helped the former owner of the Gold King mine, Herfold Luzar in the 1980’s. At that time, he helped to get a compressor in Ouray and transport it to the Gold King Mine. He told me that the water in the mine was always orange because of rust and minerals. He thinks the yellow-orange color was mainly because of the rust in the railings of the mining equipment. He told me really basic facts that we learned in class with the article He told me more about the mining community in the area and how they viewed mining in the past. Mining used to be a hobby that people would do for extra money. For example, Jim and his friends used to go to Lake Emma to search for ore that was at the bottom of the lake. One of the down sides of conducting this interview is that we did it while driving on the way to Farmington so the sound quality was not very good. My perspective did not change after this interview, and I still think that miners are not to blame for the disaster that happened this summer. I think that this was bound to happen, and that the EPA was not to blame, either.
The second interview that I conducted was with Jamie Olinger who was raised in Durango Colorado all his life. He mentions that he went to Silverton Colorado to hike and fish and watch the fireworks and camp with his family and friends. To me he was telling me that it was a get away for him and his family and friends. Another thing we talked about was his perspective on the spill. He mentions how mistakes happen. He also talked about how it could have been avoided. He thinks that we need to hurry up and clean up the Mines so mine spill will stop recurring. What he really talked about was how the Federal Government needs to come in and fix these mines that impacted Durango and Silverton. He also said something that my grandpa said, Jamie mentions that he also that he understands that it's from natural Causes. With the faults in the mountains and it leaks into the rivers and streams.Another subject we talked about was how Silverton needs to be a Superfund Site. He also understands the silverton perspective how tourism could go down and also Silverton was looking at mining Silverton again. The Information that Jamie and I talked about did not change my perspective on this issue. No blame on Mining industry because how Jim was in the area. Even mining in Silverton as a hobby and said of Natural causes and Jamie a young craftsman said something similar and how somethings needs to happen.
My perspective on the Animas River spill is why and how and which. I have no side to be on my water experiences has not been greatest. My real perspective is to move all the tailings to hesperus ski area and build a bike park. And figure a way to block the mines polluted water and make silverton a Superfund site. I am up for whatever happens.
In the article Superfund Label stokes Silverton’s Curiosity says a Superfund is a collaborative effort too, Hestmark said. It about enlisting the Community’s ideas. After I saw this maybe Gravity Community has a chance. In the article Silverton Flirting With Superfund, says Many Silverton Residents interviewed by The Durango Herald last summer feared a Superfund designation would stymie tourism and soil prospect of mining’s return. And maybe the Superfund would bring more people to stay and enjoy there time in silverton and maybe people will come for the mines and maybe other reasons too. There are many places out there with superfund with a lot of tourism. There’s Moab Utah and Leadville Colorado and Aspen Colorado and many more. The EPA should put Silverton on the Superfund list.
Another perspective I have on Silverton is how Durango and Silverton is connected in ways. For example Tourism is a big one where durango is connected people come all around to ride on the Train. If people stop paying money to ride the train durango to silverton both Durango and Silverton Profits would go down. The Hotels and restaurants would have low tourist Silverton and Durango would also fall. A another part of this tourist problem that Silverton has is skiing in silverton is a big thing to people who live in durango to ski Silverton big pow days while staying in Durango. They pay money to ski silverton and afterward go eat at Silverton bars and maybe even stay because of the snow and Avalanches. Even though that Durango to Silverton is Around 50 miles or so. We share the San Juan Mountains and River. A super fund will not only hurt Silverton but Durango too.
