Chemistry Gold King Mine Spill Project
To what degree do scientists have an obligation to communicate scientific concepts and data to the public in an understandable manner?
To a degree I understand more about water treatment and the scientific way of understanding how water treatment is being used at the Gold King Mine. And having understanding of dissolving metals in the Gold King Mine. The understanding of how we are using Lime to level the pH at the Gold King Mine. With communicating to the public on scientific data and knowledge we explored was a little nerve rattling. I felt this because the social media made it into disaster topic. So people explored the Spilled on their own time. Also having people knowing and also understanding the manner well enough to be testing me at the Exhibition on my own topic.
• How has your understanding of scientific knowledge and/or the process of doing science changed throughout the semester as you’ve examined and manipulated data collected by professional scientists and performed analogous experiments to collect and analyze your own data?
My understanding of the scientific knowledge and process that we went over this semester and how it changed over the semester went on is the understanding the Gold King Mine spill. Also having understanding of a small part of Chemistry around understanding the Gold King Mine with lab worked and class work that we did. I also think I growed in my understanding at looking at data and knowing a basis of moles calculations. Knowing how spectroscopy works in a very simply intelligence on some of work and labs we did in Chemistry in the 1st Semester.
What actions can be taken to improve the water quality in Cement Creek and the Animas River watershed?
The action that can be taken to improve the water quality in Cement Creek and Animas River Watershed is out of my opion is to put 3 other lime treatment plants up there filtering water on the Red and Bonita Mine and American Tunnels and other small mines in that area. With the leftover waste (Sludge) put in a Sanitary pit with plastic wrap in a large scale. Also have a system that test the water at several location to test the dissolved metals and the pH levels.
How have geological, biological and human factors created and exacerbated acid mine drainage and water quality issues in the Animas River?
With a large due of human greed and just natural causes that cause heavy metal drainages to Cement Creek. With rainfall and due to gravity and erosion we see drainages. We have heavy metals in mountains and there are cracks but very small were these metals get leaked out and head to streams, Creek, then to river. Silverton has been mine to it core as my grandpa calls it. With mining they are opening up poison tunel. With Gold King Mine they were trying to block it so it would not be problem but with bad judgment they open it up to a point where the water spilled out. With the heavy Iron and zinc and Aluminium deposits that were in the water worried the people of durango. The cause of the colors of the color was because of the rust. It was at points of the spill when it was dangerous.
